bay area at 10:37 the president was greeted by a crowd of supporters at sfo. as mr. obama came down the stairs from air force one he medley recognized one of them. senator diane fine stichbility the president and sen tr which which theed for several minutes. he then moved on to greet the others gathered behind the rope line on the tarmac. >> rate here. wished everyone a happy thanksgiving and was very friendly and off he went. >> shook his hand it was great. >>reporter: afterward the president got no a black chevy suburban and headed out to his first stop in the bay area. again as i said he's now in los angeles finishing his california fundraising swing. >> moving on now. new development tonight in the case of 4 white students sues pen from san jose state. 3 of them charged with committing hate crimes against their black roommate. today the naacp joined a crowd of students on campus calling for felony charges against those young men involved. here's david lou. >> san jose state president

crimes against the black roommate. >> it is very clear that if you put some type of device around somebody or harm that there should be felony charges. also the fact that he was barricaded in his ramp. he was made to do some things outside, forms of terrorism. >>reporter: rosen respondd with a statement quote while we understand the outrage of those calling for even stiffer charges in this case, the charges are not reflection of the degree of the racism. charges are a reflection of their criminal conduct. students express dismay. incidents weren't reported sooner. >> the fact this just went on and nobody said anything. nobody spoke up. nobody was going to help somebody out? when they get put down like that. it's just it's just flabbergasting. >>reporter: in san jose, abc 7 news. >> truck drivers are planning another work stoppage at the port of oakland on unanimous vote, 3 50 member port of oakland trucker association has decided to stop work at the port the day before thanksgiving this wednesday.

developing news in oakland. police search for whoever opened fire on group of people tonight. 7 were shot. at least 5 people were transported to the hospital. this happened just after 6:00 o'clock. sky 7 hd was over the scene at 96th and olive street where the search for suspect was going on. police have not rae leased the conditions of any of the victims at this point but again 5 went to the hospital. our reporting continues writ now on twitter. follow us at this web site. >> the fda ordered mount vow base dna analysis company 23 and me to stop selling its main product. the fda says 23 and me does not have the appropriate authority though it has had plenty of time to get the clearance. heather has the story. >> most fda cleared consumer genetic test services screen for single disease. while 23 and me web site promises health

christmas. >> beyond the human tragedy of typhoon also serious concern about the variability. 2 and half years ago abc 7 news traveled to the philippines with bay area scientist. i reported the findings to you at that time in a special half hour program on abc 7. tonight assignment 7 report how the partnership developed on that expedition are now paying off today. long before the tie fan ripped through thehilippines,s the california academy of sciences was already working to protect this island nation traj ill habitat. now that effort is kicking in hay gear. >> awareness it created more pro found than anything i have in the philippines in 20 years. everybody is paying attention. >>reporter: in 2011 marine biologist terri led a team to the philippines. largest expedition in academy history. american and filipino scientist explored from the top of volcano to the bottom of the ocean. it will take years to

study everything they found but some of the research has already being put that action. just days after the typhoon hi hit, terri was back in the philippines invited by provincial government to talk about managing and protecting the coast line. >> it's really fundamentally important from the standpoint that healthy environment is going to help moderate storms like this typhoon. >>reporter: a lieutenant of the typhoon damage came from huge waves that swept through low lying communities. >> this is tied to climate at change and the future everyone sees and they have to be really ready and prepared for that. >>reporter: critical part of the preparation is keeping coral reef healthy and protecting man grove trees with extensive root systems along the shore. the trees and reeves act as buffer for the coast line with the energy storm surge but threat and by human activity. government leaders want to turn things around. >> this is really new territory and really exciting that they

have asked us to be their partner. >>reporter: academy research shows the benefit of creating large under water park where no fishing or human inference is allowed. they become nursery that remen issue the rest of the ocean. research also shows saving mountain rain forest directly affects the coral ree reef. forest hold in soil so it doesn't flow downstream in the ocean and cover the reef with silt. over the last year academy brought 5 filipino scientist to san francisco for training. approve hear at the university of the philippines, key partner with the academy in the protection of biodiversity. >> the knowledge. the instrument. the expertise that they bring in to help us by diversity is great. >>reporter: the reefs and forest are critical to the growing eco-tourism industry. one of the richest ecosystem anywhere in the world. and despite the typhoon destruction most of the country is still open for business.
